TEHRAN -- The Iranian Kurdish ensemble the Kamkars is scheduled to perform during the WOMAD festival, which will be held from April 23 to 25 in Abu Dhabi.
WOMAD, which stands for World of Music, Arts and Dance, is held annually in different countries. The festival brings together artists from all over the globe to celebrate the world’s many different forms of music, arts and dance. The Kamkars will be performing on April 24 along with some other participants including Youssou N’Dour (Abu Dhabi), Abdullah Chhadeh and Syriana (Syria), the Dhol Foundation (India), Etran Finatawa (Niger) and Sa DingDing (China). Armenian musical legend Jivan Gasparyan and Algerian Rai superstar Khaled will participate in the event. Musicians from South Korea and Pakistan and Balkan and South African regions will also be among the participants. Stages at the Abu Dhabi Corniche Beach, Al Jahili Fort, Al Ain, and several other venues will host musicians from around the world. Peter Gabriel, founder of WOMAD and co-founder of the Genesis band, has described this year’s festival as a great opportunity for WOMAD to find a home in the Persian Gulf region. “We have taken WOMAD to many places in the world, but this will be our first time in the Middle East -- a part of the world whose strong and rich culture has been one of our inspirations,” he said in a press release which has been recently published in the festivals website. No ticket is required for the festival.
